They take you straight from noob easy to serious video geek stuff. Potplayer's, like most windows video players, are terrible. They're so good I don't mind one bit that the docs are so poor. No need to install different codecs all the time when using the player. SMplayer has better video performance than any of them except gnome mplayer and very intuitive video settings. PotPlayer is a free multimedia player with plenty of features and rich customization. I don't really like banshee and hate totem. It's the default on my 1Gb netbook, though I don't play video on that much. gnome-mplayer, like smplayer, is a GUI front end for mplayer which is less featured but very light. I use smplayer as my default for video and vlc is my second choice.

Unfortunately linux novices often think they're going to be able to use all their windows apps in linux with wine.
